Funding For Local Manufacturer

A Centreville-based manufacturer has officially opened its new facility.

Government officials were on hand at BWS on Monday, May 13, for the grand opening at the former Thomas Equipment plant in the village.

The provincial and federal governments announced they have pitched in over $1.5-million in total to help BWS with the move.

The Feds are offering a repayable loan, while the province is investing over $800,000.

The new location will increase the company's capacity and improve safety and efficiency.

BWS also hopes it will lead to more production and up to 30 new jobs.

Winner Sold in Woodstock

You might want to double check your numbers if you bought a ticket on Friday's, May 10, Lotto Max draw.

The Atlantic Lottery Corporation says it appears as though a winning ticket of almost $297,794 was purchased in Woodstock.

The winning ticket had six of the seven winning numbers plus the bonus.

ATV Collides With Car

RCMP are investigating after an ATV accident in Florenceville-Bristol.

Late Friday afternoon, May 10, an ATV collided with a vehicle where the NB Trail crosses the parking lot at the Great Canadian Dollar Store.

The driver of the ATV, a 27-year-old man from Lansdowne, was taken to hospital with a broken leg.

The driver of the other vehicle was not hurt.

Police say alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Border Fee Proposal Rejected

It appears Canadians will not be facing new fees when they cross the border into the United States.

A U.S. Senate committee has rejected a proposal to collect fees at land border crossings.

Government House Leader Peter Van Loan says he's pleased with the decision, saying new fees would have been very damaging to both the Canadian and American economies.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security had wanted Congress to authorize the study of a new border fee.

Robbery Suspect Headed for Trial

A man has requested trial by judge and jury on charges related to an attempted robbery at Cozy Cabins Motel.

28-Year-old Jeffrey Tyrell McLean appeared in the Court of Queen's Bench on Monday, May 6, to set a trial date.

A judge set aside five days for the trial beginning Sept. 16.

McLean has pleaded not guilty to robbery and assault charges related to an incident at the motel in Lower Woodstock last November.

On Nov. 13, a man entered the Cozy Cabins motel in Lower Woodstock and attempted to steal money.

The owner of the motel with help from two patron held the suspect and held him until police arrived on scene to arrest the individual.

McLean has been released on conditions until a trial.

Forest Fire Burning Near Village

Perth-Andover village CAO says fire died down significantly this morning with a little help from the weather. Still concerns of wind picking up and re-igniting flames though.

According to Perth-Andover Mayor Terry Ritchie the fire is burning in the hills north of the village.

Ritchie says about 200 homes have been evacuated on the Perth side of the river.

The Department of Natural Resources estimates the size of the fire to be about 100 hectares.

The forest fires have lead to the school district shutting down all schools in Perth-Andover for the day.

The fire started at about 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8.

Recreational boaters are asked to avoid the St. John River by Perth-Andover due to water bomber skimming activity."

The Village of Perth Andover is advising residents to pay close attention to the air quality over the next few days due to the smoke from the fire. Keeps windows and doors closed if you have concerns. You may have to consider relocating until the smoke completely clears. Local officials are monitoring the situation and will notify residents if any safety concerns arise.

Tepper Files Suit

A Grand Falls area farmer who is suing the Canadian government after spending more than a year in a Beirut jail says he still has nightmares from his ordeal.

Henk Tepper says the experience of being held in a dark, basement cell will stick with him for the rest of his life.

The 46-year-old man was detained on an international arrest warrant in March 2011 on allegations that he exported rotten potatoes to Algeria.

The Drummond man denies the accusations.

In a statement of claim filed yesterday with the Federal Court in Ottawa, Tepper says Canada didn't do enough to try to secure his freedom.

As a result, he alleges his right to life, liberty and security of person were violated.

Tepper returned to Canada last year after receiving a Lebanese presidential decree.

The Attorney General of Canada has 30 days to file a statement of defence.

Town Accepts Planning Service From RSC

A former mayor, turned councillor is praising a new agreement that will see Hartland receive planning services from the Regional Service Commission.

Wayne Britton says he wishes the service had been available 10 years ago because it will be helpful in growing and developing the community.

Britton says the deal, which could save the town about $2,400 a year, is a good one.

At a regular meeting Monday night, May 6, the council voted unanimously to sign a contract for services.

The town will dissolve its Planning Advisory Committee, and Hartland will have one representative appointed to RSC 12’s Planning Review and Adjustment Committee.

Forest Fire Damages 3-Acres

A fire has damaged about three-acres of woods in the Lansdowne area.

Just before 8:00 Monday night, May 6, the Hartland fire department responded to the blaze.

It took 17 members of the fire department and six members from the Department of Natural Resources about two hours to get things under control but fortunately there was no threat to any structures.

Hartland Fire Chief Mike Walton says it appears that the fire was deliberately set.

The entire province remains under a no burn order.

Miss Woodstock Crowned

New Brunswick's first town has a new queen.

Darian Brown was crowned Miss Woodstock 2013 at the annual pageant Monday night, May 6, at Woodstock High School.

Brown is a high school senior and the daughter of Gail Paul and Carl Brown.

She plans to become a registered nurse in the future.

Sydney Rogers joins Brown in her royal court as First Princess, while Tanisha Breau is Second Princess.
