New Inductees to Woodstock Sports Wall of Fame

Woodstock's Sports Wall of Fame is growing.

Paul Allen and the Woodstock Rebels ladies softball team are set to be inducted Saturday, May 19.

Allen has played and coached baseball since the 70's and has helped bring home numerous championships to Woodstock.

The Rebels were top of the game throughout their tenure, topping it all off with a back to back wins of the NB Master's title.

The ceremony will be held on the afternoon of Saturday, May 19, at the Carleton Civic Centre.

New Mayor in Plaster Rock Ready to Prove Herself

Plaster Rock voted in Alexis Fenner for mayor on Monday night.

Fenner is grateful for the chance to prove herself in the eyes of the people.

She also looks forward to serving the village for the next four years.

Already knowing the councillors on a personal level she's anxious to get to know them on a business one and get to work on what she thinks is important.

Councillors Timothy Corbin, Carolyn Crawford, Terry Harding, and Tony Wright will meet with the mayor on May 22nd for the first official time.

Fenner thinks the council will work well together to improve the village over the course of their four-year term.

Students Compete at National Competition

A team of students from Southern Victoria High School are on their way back from Winnipeg Friday, May 18.

Chanelle Sappier, Bree Perley, Alexis Perley, and Jocelyn Peter-Paul were in the Manitoba city to compete in the E-Spirit National Business Plan Competition for Aboriginal Students.

Although they didn't pick up an award at the ceremony on Thursday, May 17, the students had a lot of fun and learned a few things during the 16-week period.

The team was the only representative from the province and they were selected for coming up with a business called Broken Recordz.

The girls designed a promotional business for local Aboriginal music artists.

Compensation For Flood Victims Not Up to Expectation

Compensation cheques to victims of Perth-Andover's flood began to arrive this week, but what people are getting is well below expectations.

Al McPhail, the Chairman of the Flood Victims Committee says most people he's talked to are getting 40 to 50 percent of what they asked for.

On Thursday, May 17, McPhail told K93 News the compensation people are receiving is leading to some tough choices.

McPhail says there is a review process if victims feel adjustors missed something in their claim, but there isn't a whole lot people can do to get more compensation.

He says the committee is still pushing the government for relocation plan, but encourages victims to do whatever they can with the compensation.

New Mayor Getting to Work in Florenceville-Bristol

New faces in the local government for Florenceville-Bristol doesn't have Mayor Karl Curtis worried.

With a mix of old and new the council was shaken up during municipal elections on Monday, May 14.

Curtis has taken the lead and reached out to others on the council to get things moving.

Councillors Elizabeth Campbell, Daniel Guest, Janice Kinney, Thomas Davidson, Nancy Whyte, and Rick Pryde will all be meeting officially for the first time in the next few weeks.

Curtis says the group has a few things already on the agenda.

The Mayor says the main concern right now is road repairs.

New Well For Nackawic Getting Closer

A new well in Nackawic will mean no worries about running dry.

Using only one well for many years has worried town Public Works Supervisor Marco Morin about something happening that could leave residents with no reliable water source.

Plans have been drawn up and are entering the last stages.

Relying on the same aquifer the town expects to see no difference in the taste or quality of the water.

Morin hopes to see the final stages of the project begin sometime around November.

Fire Destroys Car

A fire that destroyed a car in Newburg Wednesday, May 16, is under investigation.

Just after 12:00 Wednesday afternoon the Woodstock Fire Department was called to 3364 Route 585 in Newburg.

When they arrived a vehicle parked in the driveway was engulfed in flames.

Chief Ricky Nicholson says the car is a total loss, and they believe the fire started in the steering column.

Hartland Mayor Has Many Goals

The newly elected mayor in Hartland has his eyes set on a number items to tackle in his first term.

Craig Melanson says local entrepreneurs have done a great job at creating jobs in the town, now it's up to the municipality to make sure people working the jobs view Hartland as a great place to live as well.

Melanson tells CJ104 News on top of the well publicized need for a new arena and library, a revamped website is on his to do list.

Melanson says growing the town's population is also a priority, he says with the infrastructure already in place he feels the town can service two-thousand people or more without increasing the cost of services.

The new mayor will be joined on council by Wayne Britton, Travis Dickinson, Tracey Demerchant and Patrick Harris.

Fools Back on the Roof

Hoping to raise over $17,000 again this year Two Fools on a Roof are back on their perch.

Andrew Garnett and Scott Dunlop climbed onto the roof at 6am Thursday, May 17, and plan to stay there until Monday, May 21, at noon for what Garnett calls a vacation get away.

Andrew Garnett and Scott Dunlop will be on the roof of Homezone Electronics in Woodstock for one-hundred hours over the holiday weekend.

Andrew Garnett hopes people come out to see what's new this year.

The duo hopes to draw an even bigger crowd than last year to help support the Woodstock Relay for Life which is set for June 1.

Falls Brook Centre Receives $45,000

The Falls Brook Centre has an extra $45,000 to help them with their environmental work.

Two of their projects received funding, part of almost 200 across the province.

Greg Lynch is the education coordinator for the Falls Brook Centre.

He says they are happy to put most of the money towards their new project.

Lynch says there was lots of excitement when they found out they were receiving the money.

The organization also received money from the fund to continue to operate their Renewable Energy Information and Assistance Centre.

Close to $4 million in grants were given this year in New Brunswick.
