Album Review

With a kit bag of powerful songs written by Isaac Hayes and David Porter, and with Stax's house band the MG's backing them up, Sam Moore and Dave Prater came roaring out of Memphis with a string of hard-hitting soul singles in the late '60s, each one an enduring classic. This brief disc has several of those hits ("Hold on I'm Coming," "Soul Man," "I Thank You"), but unfortunately not in the original versions. It's still a high octane set, but by the early '80s, when these versions were recorded, the energy and fervor that made Sam & Dave so combustible as performers was obviously starting to run thin.
