Album Review

Solid retrospective of their Atlantic years (1967-71), including all the hits and several misses. A lot of the songs were cut at Muscle Shoals, Memphis, or Atlantic Studios, and accordingly the arrangements have a deep soul flavor characteristic of Atlantic's late-'60s releases (although they worked briefly in Philadelphia in 1969 for a Gamble-Huff-flavored sound). Includes covers of songs by Isaac Hayes, Roebuck Staples, Dan Penn, and Gamble/Huff, all of which they make their own with lovely harmonies and imaginative interpretations.
Richie Unterberger, Rovi
